Chris Allegretta4ceb30c2002-03-30 16:56:53 +0000103/30/2002 - GNU nano 1.1.8 is released. New features include an
2 "Insert Output of External Command", ^R^X, and a .spec
3 file is now included in the distribution. There are
4 cleanups in the usage code, fixes for regex parsing,
5 the file browser, the NO_CONVERT auto-detect, indented
6 justification, the internal spell checker, and a serious
7 bug where reading a file of 0 lines would hang nano.
8 Also, the "show position" code now shows the starting
9 column as 1 instead of 0. Have fun!
10
Chris Allegretta97489d22002-03-05 23:47:44 +00001103/05/2002 - GNU nano 1.1.7 "lets change everything and see what breaks"
12 is released. New features include new flags
13 -N,--noconvert to stop any file format conversion and
14 -Q, --quotestr for the new quoted text justification,
15 a new tempnam() implementation to avoid silly warnings,
16 DOS and Mac file options in the Write File dialog,
17 multiple save files (file.1) for abnormal exits, ^C
18 now shows column as well as character position, and
19 multibuffer allows duplicate files, even unnamed ones.
20 Also, the static shortcut and toggle lengths are
21 history, nano now reads $SYSCONFDIR/nanorc if rc file
22 support is enabled, and nano is now built with (and
23 requires for rebuilding) autoconf 2.5.
24 This release also includes fixes for some memory
25 leaks, detecting DOS and mac file format, justification,
26 suspending keys, search & replace under various
27 conditions, variable width for shortcuts, and the usual
28 ton of translation updates.
29
Chris Allegretta491029e2002-01-25 17:02:32 +00003001/25/2002 - GNU nano 1.1.6 is released. Lots of new features in this
Chris Allegretta05f40652002-01-23 02:37:36 +000031 release. New Meta-keys were added as alternates for
32 control sequences: Meta-A for the marker key (^^), and
33 Meta-G for the 'goto dir' key in the file browser (^_).
34 The color syntax highlighting now supports multiple
35 lines via start="regex" end="regex" syntax, and the
36 .nanorc regex format itself has changed. Also, the
37 gettext code was upgraded to version 0.10.40, and nano
38 will now display a message if only occurrence of a
39 given search exists.
40 For bugfixes, there are fixes for spelling,
41 stray newlines in the usage() function, suspend issues
42 with tcsh, auto-indent and wrapping clashes, ugly code
43 in rcfile.c, global variable compatibility with AIX.
44 There are also oodles of translation updates.
45 Have fun with it.
46
Chris Allegretta110927b2002-01-05 19:49:06 +00004701/05/2002 - GNU nano 1.1.5 is out. The main new feature in this
Chris Allegretta05f40652002-01-23 02:37:36 +000048 release is the changed behavior of the keypad. Nano now
Chris Allegrettabdea41e2002-01-05 18:54:43 +000049 does the Right Thing and used keypad() by default. If
50 you wish to use the keypad arrow keys in certain
51 terminals, you may use the -K or --keypad flag to
52 use the old behavior. Users of other OSes should see
53 better handling of their non-keypad keys in this
54 release. Other changes include more Hurd fixes, fixes
55 parsing the .nanorc, display fixes for the color syntax
56 highlighting, gettext stabilization and many translation
57 updates. This is amost like a stable release, much like
58 in the 0.9.x series when every other release was the
59 mosts stable one :) Have fun!
60
Chris Allegretta7bf25092001-12-12 02:44:40 +00006112/11/2001 - GNU nano 1.1.4 is released. This release contains
62 rudimentary color syntax support (but it's still
63 broken), compatibility fixes for the Hurd and FreeBSD,
64 spell checker and wrapping fixes, and more. It seems
65 that the amount of interest in the code is inversely
66 proportional to the amount of time since last release,
67 so it's time to show the world all the changes since
68 1.1.3 ;) Have fun with it!
69
Chris Allegrettadc57bba2001-10-26 16:14:45 +00007010/26/2001 - GNU nano 1.1.3 is released. As far as new features go,
71 the help system is now available for all functions in the
72 editor. Also, nano will also now print a message on
73 the status bar when it automatically converts a file from
74 Mac or DOS format, and trying to load a file that
75 has already been loaded in multibuffer mode will now also
76 cause an error message. There is now a "goto previous
77 word" which you can use by hitting Meta-Space Bar.
78 As for fixes, a SEVERE bug in the
79 null_at code which discarded the memory address of
80 reallocated memory has been fixed. This is probably
81 the biggest bug fix in well over the last year of
82 development. There are also some display fixes for when
83 the screen shouldn't center itself on cut or uncut text.
84 Also, the comments in the header files incorectly said
85 that nano was distributed under version 1 of the GPL when
86 the accompanying license was the GPLv2.
87 If you're using nano-1.1, it is highly
88 recommeneded you upgrade to this release. If using 1.0,
89 wait for version 1.0.6 which should be available early
90 next week. Enjoy!
91
Chris Allegretta03260b42001-10-04 01:24:07 +00009210/03/2001 - GNU nano 1.1.2 is out there. Many new features in this
93 release, including support for auto-converting from
94 DOS and Mac formatted files, as well as toggles for
95 writing out files in these formats. Pico's -o flag has
96 been implemented, as has some new smooth scrolling code
97 (which can be used in place of the default jerky scrolling
98 behavior). Also, there is now a "find matching
99 bracket/brace/etc" feature (Meta-]). The .nanorc file
100 now accepts setting the tabsize, and the help text at the
101 bottom of the editor is now better spaced out in the
102 search/replace prompts. There are also the usual helping
103 of bugfixes, translation updates and, surely a bug or two.
104 You better get ready!
105
Chris Allegretta0e8c8d82001-07-29 01:16:27 +000010607/28/2001 - GNU nano 1.1.1 is released. Our second 1.1 unstable release
107 features many bugfixes from the initial release, in
108 particular fixs for the multibuffer code, and various
109 compiler macro fixes. The shortcut lists for
110 the search and replace prompts are a little more logical
111 (with cancel the last option again), and the included
112 gettext was re-downgraded to 0.10.35 due to problems
113 on the PPC platform. GNU nano now includes its own
114 aclocal macros in the m4/ directory to allow rebuilding
115 the configure script to work on platforms regardless of
116 their gettext version.
117
Chris Allegretta9a748602001-07-15 16:07:23 +000011807/15/2001 - GNU nano 1.1.0 is released. This is the first release
119 in the 1.1.x unstable series of GNU nano. It
120 incorporates all changes up to the 1.0.3 release,
121 and also includes many many new features, including
122 appending to as well as overwriting files, writing
123 marked text to a separate file, dynamic wrap length,
124 lots more compatibility with Pico, and new optional
125 features like .nanorc file support and multiple file
126 buffers! All in all, plenty of new stuff that's sure
127 to introduce lots of bugs ;-) Have fun with it, but
128 be careful, unstable means unstable.
129
Chris Allegretta38068cd2001-04-06 20:04:23 +000013004/06/2001 - GNU nano 1.0.1 is out there. The only new feature is a
131 configure option for those who want to disable all
132 word wrapping from nano, --disable-wrapping. Bug fixes
133 this release include some bugs with autoconf and i18n,
134 and several fixes in the file browser including a
135 segfault on Solaris, symlinks to directories now work
136 properly, and nano now sorts files case insensitively
137 like pilot. Have fun with it.
138
Chris Allegretta2bfbda02001-03-23 03:50:44 +000013903/22/2001 - GNU Nano 1.0 is released! The autoindent wrapping bug
Chris Allegretta4aa302f2001-03-18 18:50:04 +0000140 has been fixed, as well as strange bug when using Pico
141 mode and regex search. There have also been some minor
142 spelling and documentation updates. As stated on the
143 website, there are currently no known bugs with nano, but
144 some will pop up eventually and they will be addressed in
145 subsequent releases. We hope you enjoy this first stable
146 release of nano, and as always, feedback is welcome!
147 nano@nano-editor.org.
148
Chris Allegrettaf4a98642001-02-19 05:28:00 +000014902/19/2001 - Nano 0.9.99pre3 brings a lot of changes! The most important
150 being that nano is now officially a GNU program. Some
151 changes have been made for GNU compatibility (like the
152 default list of shortcuts, "^G Get Help" is now Listed and
153 "^_ Goto Line" is not). The Yes/No/All keys have
154 finally been internationalized also. All in all, quite
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000155 a few changes, considering nano is supposed to be in a code
156 freeze. But there are the usual helping of bugfixes, a
Chris Allegrettaf4a98642001-02-19 05:28:00 +0000157 nasty bug when cutting text in -k mode and some
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000158 compatibility issues with older ncurses libraries have also
159 been fixed. All in all, a lot to see.
Chris Allegrettaf4a98642001-02-19 05:28:00 +0000160
Chris Allegretta90e04042001-01-31 18:01:24 +000016101/31/2001 - Nano 0.9.99pre2 is released. Not surprisingly, all that is
162 new is bugfixes, bugfixes, bugfixes. There were a few
163 cleanups in unneeded global variables and duplicate
164 functions, but most is just fixing. Specifically, there
165 is now a preliminary (read: needs testing) fix for
166 resizing the editor in any mode other than normal edit
167 mode. Other fixes include some more tab completion
168 segfaults, and an silly segfault that occurred when
169 successfully writing a file on the 2nd try (i.e. after an
170 initial write error). Slowly but surely, on toward 1.0 we
171 travel.
172
Chris Allegretta9d6f3f32001-01-21 02:35:03 +000017301/17/2001 - Nano 0.9.99pre1 is released. This is the first pre-1.0
Chris Allegretta9faa3f12001-01-18 04:37:09 +0000174 release of nano, and is also the first release since the
175 code freeze for nano 1.0. Don't expect (or request) any
176 new features between now and nano 1.0, only bugfixes,
177 optimizations and doc/translation updates. For fixes, a
178 nasty segfault when trying to insert one's home directory
179 (~), some checks for the NumLock key making the keypad
180 go awry, window size sanity checks, many autoconf fixes,
181 and support for the KDE konsole keypad layout. Have fun.
182
Chris Allegretta16991442001-01-07 22:06:11 +000018301/07/2001 - Nano 0.9.25 is the "Just one more feature I swear!" release.
184 It includes one new feature that Pico has had forever, a
185 built-in file browser. Since not everyone may want this
186 option, there is a --disable-browser option to the
187 configure script as well. Other changes include slightly
188 different keypad handling, and a bugfix for crashes when
189 tab completion in certain instances. Have fun and Happy
190 New Year!
191
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +000019212/18/2000 - Nano 0.9.24 is released. This version contains the last of
Chris Allegretta66149e72000-12-19 02:51:06 +0000193 the security fixes for writing files, as well as for a
194 nasty segfault when nano is unable to open a file for
195 reading, among other fixes. Nano also now cowardly
196 refuses to open device files, to stop silly things like
197 trying to open /dev/zero. New features include being
198 Able to use Meta-Meta-<key> as Control-<key>, better
199 HURD support, and some new flags have been added for Pico
200 compatibility. Upgrading to this version is highly
201 recommended.
202
Chris Allegretta88167602000-12-09 00:07:06 +000020312/08/2000 - Nano 0.9.23 is the "race conditions bite" release. The
204 main reason for this release is the less-than-optimal
205 fix for the security issue in nano with following symbolic
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000206 links. Hopefully this will fix the problem permanently.
Chris Allegretta88167602000-12-09 00:07:06 +0000207 The --nofollow option also works again for those who
208 are real security nuts. There are also some display and
209 search fixes, and the --disable-spell function was renamed
210 to --disable-speller to be in line with nano and pico's
211 "speller" term.
212
Chris Allegrettaac139dd2000-12-02 21:31:17 +000021312/02/2000 - Nano 0.9.22 is released, with many more changes and
214 additions than imaginable. The most important change is
215 a fix for unsafe handling of symbolic links which could
216 lead to symlink attacks if nano were to exit because
217 of an error or signal. Also there are better checks when
218 saving files.
219 As for new features, username tab completion is
220 now working well, the internal spell checker code has been
221 tweaked, you can now unjustify if you don't like how the
222 justify formatted your text, and there are more
223 options for configure, including --disable-spell and
Chris Allegretta9ee2a0d2000-12-02 21:50:57 +0000224 --disable-justify and --enable-extra (for those who like
225 surprises). All in all, a whole lot of changes in
Chris Allegrettaac139dd2000-12-02 21:31:17 +0000226 a little over a week.
227
Chris Allegretta71366cd2000-11-23 21:04:27 +000022811/23/2000 - Happy Thanksgiving! Nano 0.9.21 is our "last version was
229 a big turkey" release. It fixes several bugs introduced
230 by the previous version, as well as a few long-
231 standing display bugs. All 0.9.20 users are strongly
232 encouraged to upgrade to this release.
233
23411/18/2000 - Nano 0.9.20 is finally out the door. Probably the biggest
Chris Allegretta44b52ca2000-11-18 16:46:14 +0000235 change is the brand new way nano displays previous search
236 and replace strings (they are now editable!) This is a
237 break from Pico's (inconsistent) interface, so if you
238 don't like the new way, "Pico" mode (-p on the command
239 line or Meta-P within nano) still works the "old"
240 way.
241 Other new features include being able to deal with
242 search strings of any length, a new internal spell feature
243 (courtesy of Mr. Rocco Corsi) and tab completion when
244 reading in or writing out files! There's also the usual
245 billion or so bug fixes. Feedback on this release is
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000246 welcome because so much has changed, especially with the
247 previous string display in search and replace. Email ->
248 nano@nano-editor.org <-. If you like something, don't like
249 something, or just want to order a pizza, let us know!
Chris Allegretta44b52ca2000-11-18 16:46:14 +0000250
Chris Allegretta07e97d62000-10-03 01:52:50 +000025110/02/2000 - Nano 0.9.19 is the "Chris is getting married in less than
252 a week and needs a distraction" release. There are only
253 a few actual code changes, mainly portability and compiler
254 warning fixes. Nano now also supports PDCurses, which
255 enables easily-built nano executables for Windows NT
256 and 95/98 for the brave. The official nano site has
257 changed (again) as well, check out www.nano-editor.org for
258 all the latest nano schtuff.
259
Chris Allegretta629edad2000-09-19 00:27:19 +000026009/18/2000 - Nano 0.9.18 is unleashed. It has some new keyboard
261 handling code, cygwin support out of the box, and
262 a more portable handler for the NOHELP toggle. There
263 is also a fix for a somewhat serious bug whereby trying
264 to insert a directory instead of a normal file would
265 destroy the contents of the editor. A must-see. Four
266 stars.
267
Chris Allegretta423cbfd2000-09-04 16:21:29 +000026809/04/2000 - Nano 0.9.17, the Labor Day release, is released after a
269 quiet spell (almost an entire month since last release!)
270 New features include better (not yet perfect) binary
271 display support and toggle support for most of the program
272 flags (M-c, M-i, M-z, M-x, M-p, M-w, M-m, M-k and M-e for
273 -c, -i, -x, -p, -w, -k, and -R).
274
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +000027508/09/2000 - Nano 0.9.16, after some struggling, is released. This release
Chris Allegrettaba96f7a2000-08-09 21:38:28 +0000276 should fix a few of the holes that 0.9.15 dug. The
277 "cutting text on the first line" bug is fixed, as is the
278 "cutting text on the last line" bug. Nice symmetry there
279 huh? Also the --tabsize argument should now work as well
280 as by using -T.
281
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +000028208/03/2000 - Nano 0.9.15 is the "I can't think of a release description"
Chris Allegretta0bf4e142000-08-04 02:42:04 +0000283 release. There are the usual gala of display bugfixes,
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000284 a fix for the the nasty bug in -k mode that could create a
Chris Allegretta0bf4e142000-08-04 02:42:04 +0000285 loop in the file being edited, and some other code
286 cleanup. Also, the -T option should now work regardless
287 of the curses library used. Yay.
288
Chris Allegrettaa1a55c72000-07-28 00:36:03 +000028907/27/2000 - Nano 0.9.14 is officially the "13 is so unlucky it should
290 be skipped as a version number" release. One typo
291 caused unending problems (calling nano with either -t or
292 -k caused both flags to be used). The -k code is also now
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000293 closer in functionality to Pico's -k mode; please
Chris Allegrettaa1a55c72000-07-28 00:36:03 +0000294 note that this code is not finished yet. Working on this
295 code has made me realize that there is not enough
296 abstraction in the code, and I will be working on that
297 for the next release. Until then, have fun with this
298 version.
299
Chris Allegrettaedebbe62000-07-23 16:45:20 +000030007/23/2000 - Nano 0.9.13 has a few new bits and bobs, most notably the
Chris Allegretta231d3d62000-07-22 19:33:19 +0000301 -k option from Pico (cut to end of line). The majority
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000302 of changes in this release are bugfixes, however, including
Chris Allegretta231d3d62000-07-22 19:33:19 +0000303 the usual display fixes and fixes for writing to symbolic
304 links and un-writeable files. Barring any other major
305 changes, this should be the feature set for nano 1.0,
306 whenever it might be released =-)
307
Chris Allegrettae955dae2000-07-07 22:24:59 +000030807/07/2000 - Nano 0.9.12 (The "lucky day" release) is bursting with new
309 features, bug fixes, and yummy fruit flavor. For
310 changes, the alternate replace keystroke ^W^T is now
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000311 ^W^R to be compatible with later versions of Pico.
Chris Allegrettae955dae2000-07-07 22:24:59 +0000312 ^W^T is now goto line, again for Pico compatibility.
313 As for new features, the wonderful/hated magic line
314 code has returned with a vengeance! Also, regular
315 expression searches and replaces have been incorporated
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000316 via the -R flag. And, of course, there are the usual
Chris Allegrettae955dae2000-07-07 22:24:59 +0000317 helping of display and other bug fixes to top it all
318 off.
319
Chris Allegretta4da1fc62000-06-21 03:00:43 +000032006/20/2000 - Nano 0.9.11 presents drastic rewrites of the most buggy
Chris Allegretta37985882000-06-20 00:39:20 +0000321 routines in the program, specifically the wrapping code
322 and almost all of the display routines. There are many
323 improvements and bugfixes to the display subsystem in
324 general, but there may be bugs lurking yet. Also, after
325 many MANY requests, there is now an option to set the
326 displayed tab width (-T, --tabsize). Note that
327 this function just changes the way tabs LOOK in the
328 editor, the tabs you input are still real tabs of normal
329 width (usually 8 characters); nano just makes them look
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000330 smaller or bigger while in the editor. New in the
331 translation department is an Indonesian translation (id).
Chris Allegretta37985882000-06-20 00:39:20 +0000332
Chris Allegretta2b26e0a2000-06-07 04:02:06 +000033306/06/2000 - Nano 0.9.10 is primarily a bugfix for the loss of SIGINT when
334 using "run and terminate" flags (for example, --help).
335 There are also some minor documentation updates. This
336 version of nano is the most stable in quite some time, and
337 is likely to be the most stable for awhile. Users are
338 encouraged to upgrade to this version.
339
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +000034005/31/2000 - Nano 0.9.9 introduces much better working i18n support,
341 more portability, and a ton of bugfixes. While
342 nano is not likely anywhere near 1.0 in terms of
343 code quality, it gets a quantum leap closer with this
344 release.
345
34605/18/2000 - Nano 0.9.8 (the 'what broke now?' release) should fix
347 the resize crash people have been experiencing. It also
348 offers a new input method that should allow nano to do
349 things the right way (like ^S, ^Q, custom suspend keys)
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000350 and hopefully won't break with non-US keyboards. There
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000351 are also the obligatory display fixes and speedups. Have
352 fun with it.
353
35405/14/2000 - Nano 0.9.7 (the Mother's Day release) continues in the long
355 line of display fixes, and also fixes the broken symlink
356 behavior (i.e. symlinks weren't being followed by
357 default). Hopefully all major bugs can be worked out soon
358 and we can have a 1.0 release before the end of the year,
359 but who knows.
360
36105/08/2000 - Nano 0.9.6 cleans up a lot of the display bugs that 0.9.5
362 uncovered. There are improvements (and some remaining
363 segfaults) in the wrapping code, and even more
364 display optimizations. I would still say 0.9.4 or 0.9.2
365 are the most stable versions of nano to date, but this one
366 may not be too bad =-)
367
36805/01/2000 - Nano 0.9.5 attempts to speed up the display of text
369 to be at least somewhat reasonable. Much
370 code profiling has been done to reduce the
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000371 ridiculous number of redundant display updates. This
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000372 will probably expose a lot of bugs that can then be
373 fixed, so this release is probably not for the faint
374 of heart. For anyone curious, I would call nano 0.9.2
375 the most stable version recently, so use that if you're
376 not particularly concerned with being on the bleeding
377 edge.
378
37904/25/2000 - Nano 0.9.4 fixes some problems in 0.9.3 with the last
380 line code and related segfaults. It also now has
381 much better handling for 8-bit characters. The
382 --enable-tiny code also produces a smaller executable.
383
38404/19/2000 - Nano 0.9.3 is officially the "Micro$oft" release. It
385 underscores the recent problem of bugfixes introducing
386 more bugs than they fix. The most important change
387 to this version of nano is the removal of the "magic
388 line". You will no longer see a blank line at the end of
389 the file. If you want a new line at the end of your file,
390 you'll have to hit enter to get one.
391
392 NOTE: THIS BREAKS COMPATIBILITY WITH PICO. Unfortunately,
393 this feature has been causing many many problems with nano
394 so it is being removed for the time being, and perhaps
395 indefinitely.
396
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000397 Other new stuff includes an --enable-tiny option to make
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000398 nano ultra small (disabling i18n, detailed help and the
399 marker and mouse code), and --with-slang to use the
400 slang libraries instead of ncurses.
401
40204/15/2000 - Nano 0.9.2 just fixes the serious segfault problem if
403 nano is invoked any way other than using the absolute
404 path. The bug was in the new code for checking whether
405 nano is invoked as pico.
406
40704/14/2000 - 0.9.1 has some more Pico compatibility built-in. The
408 option to switch to/from Search and Search/Replace
409 (^T) is now available, and nano now displays the
410 more Pico-like shortcut list when invoked as 'pico'
411 (i.e. if pico is a symlink to nano). There is an
412 important change to the handling of symbolic links
413 as well. Now, nano does the "correct" thing and
414 automatically writes to the object of the symlink,
415 rather than replace the symlink with the updated file.
416 This behavior is still available with the --nofollow
417 or -l flags.
418 Other new things include a fix for the infamous
419 "recursive replace" bug, and more bugfixes in the wrapping
420 code.
421
42204/07/2000 - Nano 0.9.0 has some updates, new language support and
423 a much better refresh setup (It's still not great, but...)
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000424 There should also be more stability editing long lines,
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000425 as there was a stupid mistake in the update_line
426 call. Silly me =)
427
42803/22/2000 - Nano 0.8.9 is basically just a bugfix release of 0.8.8
429 to reflect the current stagnant status of the project.
430 Most things work, the rest doesn't doesn't work because
431 (a) I can't fix it or I would have already done so, and
432 (b) the amount of patches I'm receiving right now is quite
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000433 negligible. Fortunately, this release marks the first
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000434 release since I have acquired ownership of the nano pages
435 on SourceForge. Here's hoping SF will get us some more
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000436 visibility, translators and patches.
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000437
43803/12/2000 - After a hiatus, I have finally moved (not unpacked though)
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000439 to my new home into Albany. Thus I should now have more
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000440 time to work on nano. Nano 0.8.8, the "dear god what
441 broke this time?" release, incorporates patches for both
442 i18n and many bugfixes. It is VERY likely something broke
443 this version, and it's likely I didn't even apply the i18n
444 stuff properly, so *it* may not even work.
445
446 I would like to announce that I'm going to need
447 translations soonish, so if you are fluent in other
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000448 languages than English (or even better, if your native
449 language is not English) and you would like to submit a
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000450 translation file to me, please feel free to do so. If you
451 do, I will list your name and email in the AUTHORS file as
452 the maintainer of the .po file, and from then on it is
453 yours to take care of and keep up to date.
454
45503/01/2000 - Well, to continue my trend of going back on my previous
456 release's comments, nano 0.8.7 is released. The crashing
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000457 behavior was still occurring, and this most recent fix also
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000458 fixes some other wrapping problems, so here you go.
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000459 There may be another release soon, there may not be, is
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000460 that vague enough? =)
461
46202/25/2000 - More minor bugfixes in 0.8.6, the bizarre behavior at the end
463 of a page has ceased, thankfully. I'm also moving next
464 weekend, so don't be shocked if you don't see a new
465 version of nano next week =-)
466
46702/11/2000 - Okay, here we go again. Aside from a few minor fixes and
468 some under-the-hood changes, you won't notice much
469 different in this version of nano. I haven't gotten much
470 feedback on the help feature, is it simply amazing or does
471 no one care? Write and let me know! =)
472
47302/08/2000 - Nano 0.8.3 marks the first time in a long time that there has
474 been more than three days since the last release. New
475 features include an initial help mode (YAY!), hopefully
476 much more support for i18n out of the box, and a flag
477 for more Pico compatibility in the shortcut lists
478 displayed. This release also marks the new nano
479 distribution site, http://www.asty.org/nano and email
480 address nano@asty.org for bugs, etc.
481
48202/02/2000 - Okay, I hate to go back on what I said in the last release,
483 but I may be changing jobs very soon. I will release
484 version 0.8.2 as is (no i18n, no help menu (yet). I
485 expect things to settle down by the end of next week, and
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000486 then I can try to start on the i18n support and help menu;
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000487 look for these new features in version 0.8.5 to 0.9.0.
488
48901/28/2000 - Nano 0.8.1 marks our first official step toward
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000490 internationalization (i18n) and the help system (^G). I
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000491 will be merging in Jordi's patches for initial i18n in the
492 next version, and will implement the help system with
493 i18n built into it shortly after that. Please don't
494 hesitate to send bug reports, as long as you're sure the
495 fault lies with nano =-).
496
49701/25/2000 - Nano 0.8.0 is officially the 'let's try and be at least a
498 little portable, mmmmkay?' release. There are many
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000499 portability checks and fixes; many thanks to Andy Kahn for
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000500 his patches. I removed the broken do_spell behavior with
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000501 the 'spell' program; for now, we only try to call 'ispell'
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000502 until I write a better method to handle the output of the
503 normal 'spell' command.
504
50501/24/2000 - Nano 0.7.9 features many new features. Among them are a
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000506 new autoindent feature (-i, --autoindent), tempfile
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000507 flag like Pico's -t flag (-t, --tempfile), and preliminary
508 spelling program support. The spelling function tries
509 to run 'spell' and then 'ispell' in that order, but you
510 can specify another spelling program with -s or --speller.
511
51201/17/00 - Nano 0.7.7 is officially the 'way too much stuff changed this
513 release' release. It's the busy time at work for me, so
514 please don't get offended if your patch doesn't get
515 included in the next immediate version of nano. I'm sure
516 all the changes in this release will cause a few bugs, so
517 0.7.8 will primarily be about fixing those bugs.
518
Chris Allegretta88520c92001-05-05 17:45:54 +0000519 Things added this release include resizability (kinda),
Chris Allegrettaa2ea1932000-06-06 05:53:49 +0000520 new -x and -c flags (see nano -h for help), long command
521 line flag support, and the usual array of bugfixes.
522
52301/15/00 - Nano 0.7.6 is officially the 'lightning' release. It now loads
524 large files much faster than previous versions, and is
525 even much faster than Pico or vi in some rather
526 rudimentary tests. Many thanks to Adam Rogoyski for the
527 read_byte patch!
528
52901/09/00 - As of this version (0.7.4), TIP has officially been renamed
530 to nano. The new homepage is at
531 http://faculty.plattsburgh.edu/astyanax/nano. Please
532 update your bookmarks, tell your friends, and all that
533 jazz.
